Abstract
This a translation of a Russian text on epidemiology that was published in 1958. Part 1, headed General Epidemiology and written by Professor Elkin, consists of 15 chapters on general principles of epidemiology and methods of infectious disease control. Part 2, labelled Special Epidemiology, consists of a series of sections written by some half dozen collaborators and deals with 65 different infections, grouped as intestinal, respiratory tract, blood, and external surface infections. Notably missing are sections on staphylococcal infections, the common cold, adenovirus and ECHO virus infections, and the pneumonias, whether of viral or pneumococcal origin. The chapters on specific diseases are well done. While his collaborators have limited themselves to scientific observations, Professor Elkin has missed no opportunity to incorporate Communistic philosophy and glorification of the Soviet system, which he finds is the best guarantee of successful solution of the problems which arise in the prophylaxis of infectious
