Abstract

The factors involved in the educational process arc so complex that it is difficult to find agreement among thinking men upon fundamental matters of educational policy. Thus we have a multitude of plans and movements in the field of education; this seems to be especially true during the past couple of decades, perhaps because of the growing complexity of life itself. However, a close inspection of the situation in American education seems to reveal one trend of recent years that is undeniable; that is, there is remarkable agreement on the fundamental proposition that specialization should not start too early, that a broad background in the various fields of knowledge is prerequisite to genuine success in any one narrow field of endeavor.
