Abstract

Utilizing digital filtering-enabled signal multiplexing and de-multiplexing, we propose and demonstrate a novel cost-effective all-optical virtual private network (VPN) in digital filter multiple-access (DMFA) based passive optical networks (PONs), which not only provides dynamic establishment and cancellation of the VPN communications, but also concurrently supports multiple VPN communications. In addition, due to the use of the DFMA technique, each ONU can adopt one transceiver to simultaneously transmit/receive the VPN data to/from different other optical network units (ONUs), thus leading to great reductions in network construction and operation expenditures. Moreover, digital-domain dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) is also applicable to downstream/VPN/upstream communications, and signal generation and recovery can be performed using digital signal processing (DSP).
