Abstract

Purpose: The dose of radiation which can be delivered to a cervical cancer is limited by the tolerance of the organs at risk (OAR), i.e., the bladder and rectum. The ICRU 38 recommendations for 2-D image based planning for Intracavitary Brachytherapy (ICBT) dates back to the eighties and comes with its share of limitations. In this era of 3-D image based planning and dosimetry, its relevance is therefore arguable. Though, there are recommendations from bodies like the ABS (2004) and the GYN GEC ESTRO (2006) but there is still no consensus for the volume based dose constraints for the OARS.
