Abstract

Luminosities of and distances to SiO-emitting long-period variables have been determined. The good correlation obtained between the SiO and stellar luminosities has the following consequences: the SiO masers are (1) radiatively pumped by the direct stellar radiation, (2) saturated, and (3) occur at roughly the same distance from the stellar center. In addition, (4) the pumping scheme proposed by Kwan and Scoville may provide the basic explanation for the inversion but has to be modified in some way to increase the SiO power it predicts. The tight correlation obtained for SiO is not expected for the other circumstellar masers, OH and H/sub 2/O.
