Abstract
Betsuyaku Minoru, one of Japan's leading absurdist playwrights since the 1960s, writes dramas strongly infused with an anti-establishment perspective. Betsuyaku's work is introduced here by Masako Yuasa, who focuses on the playwright's commitment to the Katatsumuri no Kai (Snail Theatre Company) and the nature of his long-term collaboration with director Murai Shimako and Betsuyaku's actress-wife, Kusunoki Yuko. Also discussed is the unique TheatreJean-Jean in Tokyo's Shibuya section, where Betsuyaku's work is often performed. Masako Yuasa has taught Japanese theatre at the University of Leeds, England, since 1990. She has translated and staged several contemporary Japanese plays at the university's Workshop Theatre and has published translations of Betsuyaku, Kishida Kunio, and Iwamatsu Ryo. A Corpse with Feet has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
