Abstract

[Editor's Note: Derek McLane is an acclaimed set designer for theater, television, and opera. His Broadway shows include Noises Off, Fully Committed, Beautiful, Gigi, China Doll, Anything Goes, The Heiress, Nice Work If You Can Get It, The Best Man, Follies, How to Succeed In Business Without Even Trying, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Million Dollar Quartet, Ragtime, 33 Variations, The Pajama Game, and I Am My Own Wife. He has designed off-Broadway for If I Forget, The Whirligig, Into The Woods, Love, Love, Love, Sweet Charity, Evening at the Talk House, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Buried Child, The Spoils, Sticks and Bones, The Last Five Years, A Lie of the Mind, Ruined, and Hurlyburly. His television credits include the Academy Awards broadcast from 2013 to 2017 and the NBC LIVE! Musicals The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz, and Hairspray. McLane also was the scenic designer for the productions of the entire Sondheim Celebration at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, in 2002. He received a Tony Award for Best Scenic Design for 33 Variations, Emmy Awards for The 86th Oscars and Hairspray, and a Drama Desk Award for Anything Goes. He designed the set for the 2017 Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's The Price.
