Abstract Various authors have measured the degree of polarization of the slowly varying component of the Sun and have derived values of 20-30 percent at X = 3.2 cm, <10 percent at X = 7.5 cm, and <2 percent at X = 21 cm. We have found at X = 8.6 mm a degree of polarization of 2 percent originating from ex- tended plage areas. The observations were carried out by means of a pencil-beam antenna approximately 3 ~6 X 3 1 in size. Measured degree of polarization is a lower limit only because of the large beam width of the antenna which averages out left-circularly polarized and right-circularly polarized components. The data obtained are analyzed in accordance with the magneto-ionic theory; an electron temperature of 85000 K is found for layers below 10000 km Publication: The Astrophysical Journal Pub Date: August 1969 DOI: 10.1086/150122 Bibcode: 1969ApJ...157..903F full text sources ADS |
