Abstract

Recent work by Austin and Klimpel concerning the nature of ball wear in rotary mills is discussed. The remarkable ambiguity that the results of a marked ball test can be accurately described by either the volume or the surface theories of ball wear is explained, and it is concluded that such tests cannot be used for determination of the values of the Austin—Klimpel parameter Δ, unless certain conditions are met. This important parameter can be determined from studies of the equilibrium ball-size distributions in the grinding charges of ball mills, and additional motivations for its measurement are presented.
