Abstract

The medical documents excavated from a Han dynasty tomb at Wu-wei, Kansu Province, in 1973 total ninety-two fragments. These fragments constitute China's oldest and most complete set of medical writings discovered to date. The medical strips in the Strips Buried at Liu-sha [Liu-sha chui chien] do not exceed five or six. The Chu-yen Han Strips [Chu-yen Han chien] mentions but one fragment which is concerned with treating injury due to cold. The present fragments exceed earlier ones by nearly tenfold and are not only a startling discovery by archaeological circles but also constitute an incomparable event in China's medical history.
