Abstract

ADSTRACT THE nursery industry in Florida utilizes large amounts of prepared soil media. Materials com-monly used in soil mixes include: imported peats, native peats, pine bark, wood shavings, sawdust, sand, calcinated clays, perlite, sugar cane pulp resi-due, and vermiculite (Waters et al., 1970). Imported peats from Canada and Europe are popular in Florida because they are generally free of weed seeds and patho-genic organisms; mixes made with these materials do not usually require disease and weed control treatment. More of the abundant Florida peat would probably be used if soil mixes could be easily and economically treated to control common soil-borne pathogens and weeds. A request was received by the Agricultural Engineer-ing Department of the University of Florida for design information on a nursery media mixing and handling facility that would utilize native Florida peat.
