Abstract

Increasing difficulty is being encountered in recruiting appropriate medical talent for obstetrics and gynecology. While considerable time has been spent on reviewing residency programs, little effort has been directed to revising the undergraduate medical curriculum. As an addition to the regular teaching schedule in obstetrics and gynecology, we have initiated a tutorial program where Year I medical students are exposed to all aspects of the discipline in a 24 week period. The strength of this program has been the increasing student awareness of the specialty as well as improved communication between the faculty and the student body. The deficiency in the program lies in the inability of the faculty to provide such a program to all students wishing to take it. It is conceivable that this comprehensive training will allow the student to enter the residency program much earlier and will successfully increase the numbers of medical graduates choosing a career in obstetrics and gynecology.
