Abstract

The following article considers the political construction of Rui Barbosa (1850-1923), viewing the process as the development of a political agenda extending beyond Barbosa’s intellectual and biographical trajectory and encompassing the constitution of a political profile influential over the republican political process in Brazil. The understanding of memory as a space for the debate of ideas reminds us of Sylvio Romero’s analysis in Doutrina contra Doutrina: o evolucionismo e o positivismo na Republica Brasileira [Doctrine Against Doctrine: evolutionism and positivism in the Brazilian Republic] (1894), which highlights the history of political ideas at the beginning of the twentieth century. The ideas, doctrines, concepts, and opinions did not so much fall from the sky or shoot from the ground, instead emerging from the mind and finding a refuge in the heart.
