Abstract

Several algorithms for constructing convolutional codes using block codes are given. The minimum distance of the resulting convolutional code is related to the distance properties of the block code used in the construction. Long low-rate convolutional codes can be found using this procedure. It is shown that any linear binary uniform convolutional code can be constructed using a MacDonald block code in the simplest algorithm. Also the “ReedMullerLike≓ codes of Massey can be constructed directly from the ReedMuller block codes.
