Abstract

This note describes a method of maintaining a constant grating gap in a moire fringe measuring system. The design of the reading head is such that the index grating rides against the scale grating on air-bearing pads. In this way, the design clearance is more easily set and is maintained more accurately than it is with the conventional type of fixed index; maximum fringe contrast and signal modulation can thus be attained at all positions along the scale grating.
