Abstract

Investigations which have figured in the present understanding of hu man requirements for iron are reviewed. Those studies reviewed include those on iron balance and turnover intestinal urinary integumental and menstrual losses of iron iron reserves physiological factors affecting iron absorption factors affecting iron availability from plant animal and other sources iron supplementation practices the assessment of iron deficiency and hemoglobin levels factors affecting iron nutritional status such as environmental stress and exercise the iron requirements of infants premature infants full-term infants children aged 2-5 years 6-12 years and 13-18 years and the iron requirements of pregnant lactating and elderly women.
