Abstract

Environmental quality standards for noise in Japan have been defined in terms of L 50 of A-weighted sound level since a Cabinet decision in 1971. The Japanese Industrial Standard Z-8731, however, was revised in 1983 to apply L eq as well as L 50 for the measurement of environmental noise. It is thus now of special interest in Japan to establish new quality standards based on L eq . In the present paper a standard based on L eq is examined by using data obtained from a social survey performed in Nagoya city on the residential noise exposure level and inhabitants' reactions to their noise environment.
