Abstract
A group of related drugs, the benzopyrones, have been suggested as a therapy for thermal injury. The drugs enhance the removal of oedema fluid from the wound site, thus improving tissue oxygenation. They also stimulate the reticulo-endothelial system (RES), consequently reducing the susceptiblity to infection. Their other advantages are: they inhibit platelet aggregation, preserve red blood cell deformability, reduce the risk of thrombosis, reduce increased capillary fragility and improve glucose transport by the phagocytes and red blood cells.
