Abstract

I was asked to write an article regarding my impressions of the environmental impact of seismic lines. I thought long and hard about this. I remembered back in the 1970s and early 1980s when seismic lines were laid by bulldozers, which were cutting through some of the most beautiful and wild places in the Colorado Plateau, badlands of North Dakota, and the arid basins of Wyoming. Seeing bulldozed swaths cutting through these areas so that petroleum companies could shoot a seismic line made one’s heart bleed. The impacts were so severe. I must admit that 20 years later seismic lines have less impact.
