Abstract

A helical spring commonly used in undergraduate simple harmonic motion labs is composed of two diameters of windings joined by a truncated conical section. A hanging spring-mass system will oscillate with slightly different frequencies depending on whether the spring is hung from its large end or from its small end. We examine the effective mass of such a spring, comparing measurements with a theoretical calculation that uses an energy approach.
