Abstract

This paper introduces the data structures and graphics-based user interface to the Engineering Support Environment (ESE). This proposed system combines and extends principles of database management, configuration management, and graphics interfaces to support the engineering life cycle activities in connection with the design, analysis, and manufacture of physical objects. ESE can be broken down to three major components: the design-related information storage component, the design data storage component, and a graphics-based user interface. Design-related information is represented in ESE using the semantically oriented IFO database model. Design data in this system is represented using AND/OR DAGs, which are extended in ESE to store historical design information and to provide sophisticated configuration management capabilities. Access to these components is provided through a multi-frame, graphics-based user environment which supports rich browsing capabilities, including interactive data updates during browsing sessions.
