Abstract

This paper describes a computer program, which is intended to serve as a design aid for the calculation of net recoverable heat from the aerobic treatment of slurry. The user has to answer a number of questions about the waste treatment system. The program will display a three-dimensional graph of the effects of mean treatment times between one and 16 days, and reaction temperatures between 15°C and 50°C, on the net extractable heat. Tables can also be displayed and printed of the extractable heat; total oxygen requirement; the residential supernatant BOD5; the heat transferred into the slurry from metabolism and the aerator; and the heat losses from the surfaces, in the effluent air and in the treated slurry, for a chosen fixed treatment time or temperature and a chosen range of temperatures and times respectively.
