Abstract

This article deals with decision making in small human groups that share renewable resources. It describes a computer-controlled laboratory that was developed to study factors that influence group members' decisions about resource uses in situations which may lead to the so-called “tragedy of the commons,” in which common resources are depleted unless all users exercise self-restraint. Simular situations can arise in organizations, societies, and supranational systems.
