Abstract

A 6-field component vector variational formulation of the electromagnetic Maxwell equations is applied to dielectrically loaded rectangular waveguides. The stationary property of the variational formulation leads to a symmetric matrix eigenvalue problem, which is then truncated and solved numerically. The entire solution procedure is computer implemented using standard library subroutines. Propagation curves and functional field representations for all the lower order modes of a waveguide structure are generated and loaded waveguide geometries having no closed-form classical solution are characterized.
