Abstract
THE SYSTEM described in this paper has been designed for ICl's Central Technical Information Unit (C.T.I.U.) and Agricultural Division's Intelligence Section. The Central Technical Information Unit propose to use it for the central indexing of Company Research Reports and Agricultural Division for technical and techno-commerciai information generated internally and externally. Other ICI Divisions have expressed interest in the system and are intending to use it when available. The investigations leading to the development of the package were carried out separately but concurrently by C.T.I.U. and Agricultural Division. As these investigations progressed it became clear that, although the needs of the two system users differed significantly in some ways, a common program package would be able to satisfy both needs. The package therefore covers two information systems, one called:
