Abstract

Health care in India is largely the responsibility of the State Governments. The implementation of the various health programmes Curative (Medical), Preventive (Public Health) and Promotional (Family Planning, Nutrition, etc)—are carried out by the State Health Departments. The health delivery network consists of many levels ranging from hospitals in urban areas to primary health centres and sub-centres in the rural areas.In the present manual system of data collection, recording and reporting, data flows from the sub-centre level to the Primary Health Centre level (PHC) and after consolidation to the District level and finally to the State Health Directorate. The data is then analysed and various reports produced for purposes of monitoring and control of the health programmes. The data is also used for planning and evaluation of the programmes.The volume of data is very large and consists of many types.
