Abstract
Detailed comparison studies are presented utilizing both theoretical and actual efficiencies of a high order finite element approximation and a low order finite difference approximation for the numerical solution of the static multigroup diffusion equation in two dimensions. The study was made on a class of problems generally referred to as “cold, clean reactors”, whereas previous studies were oriented toward model problems. Advantages as well as negative aspects of finite element approximations for full production calculations are discussed.
