Abstract
The Geological Sciences Department at California State University, Fullerton is providing a comprehensive three-year institute for fifty-two 6–12th grade earth science teachers. The National Science Foundation, local industries and school districts are providing the major support for this program which is entitled “Project Catalyst.” The purpose of Project Catalyst is to enhance teacher competencies in earth-science instruction through academic year workshops and two content-intensive summer institutes. The first summer institute included class activities and field study in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. The second will include five weeks of classroom presentations along with visits to local field sites. Half of the participants are also conducting two years of academic-year workshops within their school districts.
