Abstract

In this article, some of the design aspects of mold tubes for continuous casting of steel have been discussed and analyzed. A coupled thermo-mechanical mathematical model based on finite element methods has been presented for computations of basic design parameters of a tubular mold. The basic parameters include tube length, inner wall taper, corner radius, etc. A simulation based on an industrial rectangular mold tube from an integrated steel plant has been performed for better understanding of the basic designing process. From the simulation, it is noticed that the corner area of the solidifying shell loses contact with mold wall causing reheating of the off-corner region and thinning of shell thickness. The performance of the continuous casting process is found to be strongly dependent on inner wall taper.
