Abstract

An analytical model has been proposed for the evaluation of CTOD from the CMOD in the precracked specimens. This model, namely the ‘composite crack profile’ model, is based on a displacement profile over the crack which is parabolic in nature in the crack tip region and linear towards the crack mouth. The common point C of the parabolic and linear part of the crack profile moves towards the crack tip and ahead of it with increasing size of the crack tip plastic zone. Based on the proposed model, the CTOD expression for small scale yielding situation has the form CTOD = CMOD√[(1+ R 2a ) 2−1] ϑ( a eff w )(1+ R 2a ) where R is an effective circular plastic zone size and ϑ is a geometry dependent factor. The above analysis has also been extended to elastic-plastic situation and for the slow stable crack growth. The model is applicable to different specimen and loading geometry situations.
