Abstract

This paper describes a 3‐year experimental programme of mathematics and mathematical ideas designed to assist in meeting the demand for teachers of mathematical subjects in the immediate post primary sector. The programme comes under the development heading of ‘ complementary studies ‘ and as such was designed to meet the requirements of three essential areas: Foundation studies (one term) Subsidiary subject studies (five terms) Interdisciplinary studies (three terms) As a subsidiary complement, the course has advantages in that it can be paralleled with any major non‐mathematical discipline (e.g. crafts, commerce, art and design, physical education, home economics, etc.) provided an accommodating 3‐hour slot can be found each week of each academic year.
