Abstract

The Suunto compass and clinometer are precision, hand-held sighting instruments which can easily be modified to make a compact geologic compass particularly useful for measuring orientations of S-surfaces and rake angles of lineations. Modificaitons consist of mounting on a single baseplate the Suunto compass, the clinometer, and a circular spirit level and calibrating to eliminate parallax in angle readings. These modifications result in an instrument which is comparable in cost and in practical accuracy to the Brunton compass but is more versatile, faster, and easier to operate with one hand.
