Abstract

A comparison is made between two BSI standard methods of cement testing, using a statistical model that estimates the variability in strength development both within and between sets of concrete and mortar cubes. The same model is used to estimate variations in mean strength of mortar cubes, attributable to manual factors in the test method, to different cube preparation periods and to different machines used for compacting the cubes. The model is able to show that, with only partial mechanisation of the test procedure, manual handling makes the major contribution to variability in strength development. The manual factor can account for most if not all the variation at 28 days, but not at 1, 3 or 7 days due to chemical variability in the cement itself.
