Abstract

THERE is considerable evidence that pelleting poultry feed increases feed consumption and feed efficiency, but also increases feather pulling and the incidence of barebacks. It is quite possible, therefore, that the feeding program will determine the need for debeaking and the degree of debeaking necessary. Poultrymen have reported considerable losses resulting from improper debeaking of baby chicks, and this study was initiated in an effort to ascertain under what feeding methods debeaking is necessary and the degree of debeaking required for the most satisfactory results. A natural complement to this study was a comparison of mash versus a crumbles and pellet feeding program.Bice (1946) described an electric debeaking method and recommended that ¼ to ½ of the maxilla be removed anytime after 3 days of age.
