Abstract
The present analysis aims to compare the weight of the insurance sector with the weight of the banking sector in the European economy. In order to make that comparison, two samples, composed of the top ten European insurance groups and the top ten European banks, were analysed. Market capitalization at January 1997 was the criterion for choice. The ten largest banks chosen were: Lloyds TSB Group, HSBC, Credit Suisse Group, Barclays Bank, Deutsche Bank UBS, National Westminster Bank, ABN Amro, Abbey National, Dresdner Bank. The ten largest insurance companies chosen were: Allianz, Ing Group, Aegon, Prudential, Assicurazioni Generali, Zurich, Royal Sun Alliance, AXA, Legal and General and Commercial Union.
