Abstract

Summary The usefulness of S. cerevisiae as an experimental subject for comparing the effects of metabolically interesting substances on the equational and reductional divisions of the diploid nucleus is demonstrated. Inhibition of sporulation by these substances was mainly owing to prevention of meiosis and not interference with spore wall development. The sensitivity of meiosis was affected by the kind of carbon source included in the sporulation medium. In general, meiosis was much more sensitive than mitosis to the action of the inhibitors.
