Abstract

Introduction: Most lumbar spine surgeries are performed under general anaesthesia (GA). However, especially in the Anglo-American literature benefits of spinal anaesthesia (SA) are reported. In our clinic SA is routinely used for dorsally performed lumbar interventions. Beside soft factors such as postoperative pain perception, satisfaction of the patient as well as of the anaesthetist and the surgeon, hard facts such as time efficiency, gain more and more importance especially with regards to economic aspects. To prove the feasibility, safety, and time-effort of SA as a routine anesthesiological tool in comparison with GA, key points of time in the pre-, intra-, and postoperative flow in the operating room (OR) were analyzed.
