Abstract

This paper compares the marital satisfaction of remarried versus 1st married husbands and wives; remarriages are compared to 1st marriages with respect to the propensity to cohabit before marriage and the effect of prior cohabitation on current marital satisfaction. Based on cross-sectional data from 309 recently married couples no significant differences were found between 1st married and remarried individuals in either marital satisfaction or the propensity to cohabit before marriage. Cohabitation was associated with significantly lower satisfaction among individuals in 1st marriages while among remarried persons cohabitation made no difference in current marital satisfaction. While the notion that cohabition serves to distinguish those with a somewhat lower adaptability to the institution of marriage is largely speculative it is congruent with the findings of this study. Future research might consider whether the motivation for cohabiting differs significantly between those entering a 1st marriage and those entering a remarriage. (authors modified)
