Abstract

The transmission loss (TL) is an important acoustic property to evaluate the performance of a muffler, which needs to be thoroughly discussed and analyzed. In this work, the two most commonly used techniques for obtaining TL, i.e., two-load method and two-source method are discussed and compared experimentally. The experiments have been done using various in-house fabricated mufflers with different geometrical dimensions. The muffler being used for experiments is extended tube resonator. An impedance tube has been used for determination of TL experimentally. Experimental results obtained for TL using the two methods are compared qualitatively and it has been observed that in some cases, two-load method gives clear frequency information as compared to the two sources in high-frequency ranges. However, good agreements between the two methods were obtained in most cases.
