Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate QoL (quality of life) and nutritional status after surgery in 222 patients with gastric cancer during followup duration. Malnutrition status was 67.7% at 6 months postoperatively and nutritional satus improved as time went on (p<0.001). In the survey of the nutrient intake, malnutrition group showed significantly lower intake of energy, protein, phosphorous, sodium, potassium, zinc, niacin, folic acid. The QoL mean score of malnutrition group was 22.3 ±14.6 and normal group was 17.2±11.8(p<0.001). Malnutrition group experienced worse QoL in eating restrictions (p<0.001), anxiety (p<0.001), taste problem (p<0.01), and hair loss (p<0.001). After postoperatively, also showed a trend to experience worse QoL in taste problem (p<0.001), body image (p<0.01). Factors that independently influenced QoL were follow up duration (p<0.05), extent of gastric resection (p<0.01), chemotherapy (p<0.001), and nutritional status (p<0.01). These results suggest that nutritional status improvement may be associated with QoL and early recovery.
