Abstract

Polybutester (Novafil), a monofilament non-absorbable suture, has a greater compliance and elasticity than other non-absorbable monofilament sutures used for eyelid surgery nowadays. I have randomized the use of polybutester and polyamide sutures for different sides of lid closure in one hundred consequent blepharoplasties, then recorded the differences of two lids with respect to bruising, oedema, redness, wound breakdown, wound healing, tissue reactivity, scarring and patient's discomfort for the first 5 days, first month, third month and sixth month after blepharoplasty. Statistical analysis of above variables were performed independently by using paired-t test. There are no statistical differences in bruising, redness, wound breakdown, wound healing, and tissue reactivity between these sutures. Eyelids sutured with polyamide appeared less oedematous than the side sutured with polybutester. Patients tolerate equally with the two sutures in the first 5 days post-operatively. Scarring resulted from polybutester did show a better grading in third and sixth month follow up.
