Abstract
A comparison is made of the various discharge initiation techniques which have been used for the excitation of pulsed hydrogen fluoride (HF) lasers. Four systems suitable for application to small systems for medical applications are described and compared. A laser employing a corona surface discharge preionising element produced an output of 70 mJ at 1.2% efficiency from an excited volume of 20 ml.
