Abstract

A critical study of local optical models for elastic electron-atom scattering is presented. The partial-wave amplitudes arising from the exact second-order optical potential are calculated, for the case of scattering by hydrogen and helium at energies of less than or equal to 400 eV, and compared with the corresponding results of several local approximations. The correction to be expected from a third-order optical model is estimated.
