Abstract

SummaryA double-blind placebo controlled comparison is reported of a preparation containing 1 per cent hydrocortisone acetate and 1 per cent pramoxine hydrochloride in a muco-adhesive foam base (Epifoam) with lignocaine gel, for the relief of discomfort after episiotomy in 154 patients.Although both agents were superior to a placebo in relieving pain, there was no difference between their effectiveness. There was no effect on the development of oedema. Supplementary analgesia was needed less often in the Epifoam group than in the lignocaine group. We consider that the greater cost of Epifoam is not justified by any major increase in effectiveness relative to lignocaine gel.
