Barker, T. Abstract Photoelectric scanner observations have been made of the Balmer and Paschen discontinuities in several positions in a number of planetary nebulae and the Orion Nebula. Electron temperatures determined from these measurements are shown to be in generally good agreement with those found from forbidden lines; there is definitely no evidence that forbidden-line electron temperatures are systematically higher, as some previous investigations have found. This result suggests that in some studies metal-to-hydrogen abundance ratios in gaseous nebulae have been overestimated by nearly a factor of 2.
