Abstract
1. 1. Metabolism during flight was estimated for Delichon urbica and Hirundo rustica using the D 2O 18 technique. These estimates were compared with data from the literature for hirundines and other groups of birds. 2. 2. Metabolism during flight in hirundines and swifts lies in the range 0.035-0.069 kcal · g −1· h −1 (2.9 – 5.7 × S.M.R.), which is 49.3%–72.6% lower than other birds of similar size. 3. 3. The relatively low cost of flight in hirundines and swifts is discussed in relation to the aerial feeding habit. Features of the morphology and flight behaviour of aerial feeders are discussed.
