Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The development and application of elastic plastic fracture mechanics technology are closely related to the capability of obtaining elastic-plastic solutions for cracked bodies. Such a capability is useful in (i) obtaining fracture toughness values from small precrack test specimens, and (2) determining the integrity of cracked structures loaded beyond the small scale yielding range. Solutions to this class of non-linear problems must be obtained by numerical methods which involve the use of high speed digital computers.
