Abstract

AbstractEighteen patients undergoing a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) alternately received methohexital and etomidate anesthesia. No difference could be found in seizure duration between the two anesthetics. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation tests in eight patients revealed no abnormality after repeated injections of etomidate. We find that etomidate anesthesia, although safe for ECT, offers no benefit over methohexital in lengthening seizure duration.
