Abstract

Electromagnetic and isoscalar transition rates are compared for the lowest 2 + and 3 − states of N > Z even-even nuclei. It is found that the relative contributions of neutrons and protons to the excitation matrix elements are approximately in the ratio N Z , seemingly independent of shell structure. This result is natural for collective, but not for microscopic models.
