Abstract

SUMMARY Various circumferences and lengths of the penis and prepuce in 7 different breeds of beef cattle were measured. In general the mean sizes exceeded those quoted in most previously published reports. Bos indicus (Zebu) breeds had a significantly greater total prepuce length, 54·8 cm., than Bos taurus (European) breeds, 49·3 cm. Bos indicus breeds had a significantly greater penis length, 110·9 cm., than Bos taurus breeds, 105·0 cm. Of the Bos taurus breeds examined, polled breeds (Poll Hereford, Poll Shorthorn and Angus) had greater prepuce length than horned Herefords and Shorthorns although the differences were not statistically significant. It is suggested that the long prepuce in Bos indicus and polled Bos taurus cattle may be related to the higher incidence of prolapse of the prepuce seen in those breeds.
